This Sotheby’s auction promises to be a landmark event for collectors and fans of the "Harry Potter" series, offering a rare opportunity to own a piece of the magic that has captivated millions.

Historic Auction Event

This summer, Sotheby's New York is poised to auction a significant piece of literary and cinematic history—the original watercolor artwork that adorned the cover of the first book in the "Harry Potter" series, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (known in some regions as "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone"). This painting is expected to set a new record as the most expensive "Harry Potter"-related item ever sold at auction.

Artwork with a Magical Legacy

The artwork, created by Thomas Taylor at the age of 23, first appeared in 1997 on the cover of the first edition of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone." In celebration of the book's 25th anniversary, Bloomsbury Publishing has issued a commemorative reprint featuring Taylor's iconic illustration.

Scheduled for auction on June 26, the piece is estimated to fetch between $400,000 and $600,000. This estimate sets it as the highest pre-sale valuation ever given to a piece of "Harry Potter" memorabilia, according to Sotheby’s. The artwork previously went under the hammer in 2001 at Sotheby's London, where it achieved a record-breaking sale of $107,000 (£85,750).

A Treasure Trove of Literary Artifacts

The upcoming auction, named "The Library of Dr. Rodney P. Swantko," will not only feature the storied watercolor but will also include works from other literary giants such as Edgar Allan Poe, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Vladimir Nabokov.

Additionally, a handwritten manuscript of J.K. Rowling's "The Tales of Beedle the Bard," a collection of fictional fairy tales mentioned within the Harry Potter series, is also slated for auction. This manuscript is projected to bring in between $250,000 and $350,000.
